Gen 2 2011, 5:36 di weejayI don't usually write about music, because I'm not that good at it. I don't usually make lists of the best music from a year, because I seem to take a while to catch up with new music, often a good five years. This year has been different, though. I have been making more of an effort to keep up with music, and, more to the point, freakytrigger have just asked for readers to submit their top 20 tracks of the year, and I felt like joining in.
After a few weeks investigating anything I hadn't listened to yet, I've come up with a, um, top 37. The top 20 will be submitted, the other 17 are here because I like 37 tracks and it's my blog, my rules.
37. Matthew Dear - You Put a Smell on Me
36. Kelis - Acapella
35. Tinie Tempah - Pass Out
34. Panda Bear - Slow Motion
33. ndf - Since We Last Met
32. Vampire Weekend - Run
31. Gorillaz- On Melancholy Hill
30. The Radio Dept. - Heaven's On Fire
29. Joanna Newsom - Good Intentions Paving Company
Dic 23 2010, 20:31 di Confessions872010 has been the best year for music for a long time. I remember 2007 and 2008 being particularly great, too, but I wasn't expecting this year to be so good. This list was incredibly hard to compile and has probably been thought about way too much over the past month. Even the albums that don't make the top ten have all been so thoroughly enjoyable to listen to, so if your favourite seems quite low, it's only because the standard was so frickin' high all round. There's all the usual suspects featured here and a few others. My top three are almost too difficult to separate (they are all equally my top album of the year), yet this list demands a distinct order and a distinct order is what it will have.
I'll begin with a few albums that didn't quite make the mark.
Vampire Weekend / Contra
The biggest disappointment of the year, along with the album directly below.
M.I.A. / MAYA
Best Coast / Crazy for You
Probably the single most obvious example on this list of an album that is as catchy as it is annoying. …

Ago 1 2010, 8:19 di Thelonious9Sat 31 Jul – Field Day 2010
My second year at Field Day and well worth the return visit. Crucially, this year the rain mac stays in the bag. Good (though not spectacular weather) puts most of the punters in a good mood and doesn’t mess with the running order.
FD crams in a lot of music which is either a good thing (if you’re prepared to take a punt on people you haven’t heard of or wouldn’t normally check out) or a bad thing (see some of the previous shouts agonising over choice). Maybe they need a second day, though I suspect the economics and logistics work against this.
Always worth a word about the organisation of the thing. I could live with the clashes on running times – that’s a given at any festival. There did seem to be a lot of queuing – it took ages to get through security to get in (I’ve boarded flights in less time), and what was the deal with having your ticket taken off you intact (“you can have it back at the end of the night” Hmm…
