I absolutely adore them and think the first two albums are exceptional. The third one feels a little disjointed if I'm being honest, but I just saw them play many of the songs live at ACL last night and they all worked quite well in isolation. I think Home of the Strange's track listing has a strange flow to it and they've sort of done themselves a disservice in that regard.
This actually used to be a pretty decent band. The self titled record is solid all the way through and the vinyl sounds fantastic. Mind Over Matter is less my style but still has some good tracks on it. This new album is absolute garbage, they aren't even a rock band anymore. This electronic dance pop nonsense is ridiculously terrible and disgusting. The only 2 tracks that don't completely suck were singles that were already released months ago and are now thoroughly played out. The only redeemable quality of the album are the things that are done vocally, the "music" makes me cringe.
A lot of bands that had that alternative (indie) pop rock sound are moving towards that electronic dance pop direction. I also prefer a more rock sound. Changing sound for a band is necessary but this new movement makes them all sound the same. I have to say though that I actually enjoy the new Young The Giant album. It is not as good as their first but I think it could be better, in my opinion, than Mind Over Matter. Need a few more listens.
