• 1998 - 5 picks from my personal collection

Albeit these are lighthearted blog posts, I can't really think of 1998 without mentioning I lost a classmate and a childhood friend that autumn. People die all the time but he was killed in an exceptionally shocking way. Terrible case of "wrong place, wrong time" and no fault of his own. He was 14 years old, just like me. I do not think about it often and I suspect many others have pushed it to the dark corners of their minds as well. Needless to say, it wasn't a good year for me. Not to make light of that but luckily I wasn't listening to very much good music back then so the following albums have not been marred by terrible memories and experiences.

    Boris - Amplifier Worship

The name says it all. From doom metal drudgery to borderline crust punk, Amplifier Worship goes through the whole spectrum of high volume onslaught. Boris may have an increasingly intimidating and varied discography but this is as good a place to start as any. …

I got some free time (I moved to Germany) and decided to get the scrobbling working with Itunes. It was a very easy thing to get cracking on considering I am no longer behind a proxy. I was interested today seeing what I listened to the most during the past week since I had a lot of time during the day, and also ipod time while running to knock off a good amount of tracks (361, an average of 51 tracks per day!)

I was surprised to see that Bad Religion came in first with 23 plays. I saw them come up a lot in online retrospective lists as one of the most influential bands of the 80-00 years, so I think I put them on during dinner one day and they racked up a lot of plays because of the short song length. Jeff Buckley rolls in at #2 and I have no idea when I listened to him, I honestly could not tell you a word about him. I think him and Jerry Seinfeld somehow came on after I listened to some Jeff "Tain" Watts (an amazing jazz drummer).
