Sat 14 Mar – an evening on the green - Billy Idol

I had never seen any of these bands (at least, pretty sure I never saw Cheap Trick before...) so this was a very exciting night for me! The Angels may not have their original line-up, and may be missing one very significant figure, but it was still awesome to hear their songs, and they sounded good. For someone like me who's never seen them live, and who isn't hugely familiar with their entire repertoire, it was intriguing to realise how many songs I knew, but didn't know were by them.

Cheap Trick are also a band that I'm not too familiar with, but once again there are songs that I know well, but didn't really know where by them. They put on a rockin' show and I definitely felt like I was in the presence of musical royalty.

Finally the man of the night, Billy "fuckin'" Idol, was on stage and rocking. I heard all the songs I wanted to hear, from "Eyes Without a Face" to "White Wedding", "Cradle of Love" and…

In 2009, the FOX network premiered the teen musical dramedy Glee, created by executive producer Ryan Murphy. The pilot episode aired after the American Idol 8 finale on May 19th, 2009. Glee aimed to shed a light on high school stereotypes, and they covered every last one of them: from the gay guy (Chris Colfer's Kurt), to the crippled kid (Kevin McHale’s Artie), to the curvy powerhouse (Amber Riley’s Mercedes), to the Gothic Asian (Jenna Uskhowitz’s Tina), to the dumb blonde (Heather Morris’s Brittany), to the dude that barely got a speaking part or even a solo, for that matter (he left after the first season to embark on the solo career that never happened).

Along the way, however, Ryan Murphy began to realize that his characters were high school students, who weren’t going to stay in the glee club forever, and he wanted to keep them on the show by any means possible.

In season four, the show split its storylines between the New Directions in Lima, Ohio, and the graduates’ college lives in New York City. …

Where have the last 12 months gone? It only seems a couple of months ago that I was writing the opening paragraph to 2013’s Top 50 list. As usual at this time of year we’re bombarded with loads of “End of Year Lists” but the one I look forward to the most is the Classic Rock Top 50. It’s a chance to revisit some of the great rock albums of the year and, hopefully, discover something new.

1 - Rival Sons - Great Western Valkyrie
It comes as no surprise to me that this album was number 1. From the opening riff of “Electric Man” to the closing chords of “Destination on Course” this album is full of stripped back, full on Blues based rock. Jay Buchanan is in fine vocal form again screaming one minute and whispering the next. Scott Holiday’s distorted guitar sound is perfect as it cuts through the gaps left by Buchanan on tracks like “Play the Fool” and “Good Things” while Mike Miley and new bassist Dave Beste provide the muscle and groove that keeps the whole thing rocking. It’s definitely one of the albums of the year for me.
