King Tuff (US)
King Tuff is the neo-garage alter ego of multifaceted musician Kyle Thomas. Adopting the moniker in his teens as a play on his initials and the name King Tut, Thomas wouldn't begin playing as Tuff until 2006, when he self-released an album via CD-R between playing with freaky folk revivalists Feathers and J. Mascis' stoner metal band Witch. His full-length debut, Was Dead, arrived October 2008 for the Colonel label, introducing his anthemic lo-fi sonics to the masses. Touring withHunx & his Punx and Witch, plus releasing an album with his off-kilter power pop band Happy Birthday put the Tuff project on the back burner until 2011, when a split single with Hex Dispensers arrived. A year later, he teased his follow-up album with the Wild Desire single for Suicide Squeeze before offering the full monty, simply called King Tuff, which made the jump to the revered Sub Pop label and foundTuff expanding the musical palette to show his yen for retro-pop melodies.
Brooklyn's dark electro-rock project ERAAS formed out of the ashes of the like-minded post-rock group Apse when that outfit disbanded in late 2010. Seeking to do more with less, Apse founder Robert Toherreunited with one of his former bandmates and childhood friend Austin Stawiarz. The pair began writing songs that retained Apse's dark atmosphere but streamlined it with pulsating electronics, and finished their self-titled debut album in 2011. After making ERAAS available for free online, the group signed to Felte Records, which gave ERAAS an official release in October 2012.
The Haxan Cloak (UK)
Hailing from Yorkshire, but now based in London, Bobby Krlic, the multi-instrumentalist behind The Haxan Cloak released an incredible self titled debut album on Aurora Borealis in 2011, a record that blew away pretty much everyone who happened to hear it. Fusing a rare talent for classical composition with a passion for exploring serrated electronic, drone textures, The Haxan Cloak’s cinematic, complex sound is not an easy one to fully explain in words alone. ne to fully explain in words alone. In 2013 The Haxan Cloak will release his anticipated second album through Tri Angle.
