Zack Kouns creates what he calls Death Jazz, Modern Liturgical, and
Apocalyptic/Hermetic musics. He utilizes tenor and alto saxophone,
harmonium, electronics, duduk, violin, vocals, and many other instruments.
Due in no small part to the wide assortment of tools with which he
develops his songs, the musical stylings between each body of Kouns' work
The thematic and lyrical content of Kouns' forays into his self-developed
genres draws from many distinct sources, allowing him to create concept
albums teeming with metaphor and allegory. Numerous esoteric subjects,
chiefly religion, mythology, ancient history and romantic philosophy,
manifest themselves across the spectrum of his creative output.
Undoubtedly one of the busiest and most insightful individuals in the
realm of contemporary outsider art, Zack Kouns carries out activities as
bandleader, performer, author, visual artist, researcher, prankster, and
Polish publication Plac de Filad described Rory Hinchey and Alpha Strategy
in 2011 by stating, "If there is already a genre freak folk drone, they
are its representatives." The present musical approach of Alpha Strategy
manifests itself in the frenzied and erratic sounds found on 2011's Muck
EP through Hinchey's Ownness label.
The basis of Alpha Strategy's songs come from Hinchey's work with vintage
synthesizers, while other sounds are sourced from processed resonating
wine glasses, field and sampled recordings, kazoo, vocals and self-built
circuits for the generation of percussion and tones.
A musician, label operator, interviewer, deejay, and event curator, Rory
Hinchey has been active in these and many other capacities for over a
