Good Luck Mountain are born out of the delicious Tandy, led by Mike Ferrio. Tandy, was created in 1998 and toured the Western world, receiving rave reviews in publications such as No Depression, Harp, MOJO and Uncut. Their music was heard everywhere from the BBC to KCRW to Grey’s Anatomy, lauded by everyone from Bob Harris (they played three sessions for Bob!) to Jim White, and from Steve Earle to Malcolm Holcombe. Sadly, in early 2008, Tandy multi-instrumentalist Drew Glackin died suddenly and unexpectedly from complications stemming from a thyroid condition. Drew’s passing deeply affected Mike and his art, and effectively ended Tandy. Good Luck Mountain is a new beginning.
Hushed and haunting, the self-titled debut by Good Luck Mountain is as breathtaking as the expansive landscape captured on its cover. A new incarnation of the sadly unappreciated Americana band Tandy, the group changed its name after the passing of one of its key members, Drew Glackin who split his time between Tandy and the Silos. That sense of sadness is manifest in the eloquent and emotional Heaven in the Haze and a softly spoken The Perfect Circle, two tracks that find singer/mainstay Mike Ferrio offering heartfelt laments that practically challenge the tear ducts to stay dry. Parched vocals and a subtle weave of violin, viola, harp and trumpets enhance the sobering sound, and indeed, there’s not a song here that doesn’t make a lasting impression even when the volume knob demands it be turned to a higher register. Rarely is an album as affecting, and indeed, in terms of casting its spell, Good Luck Mountain has already scaled a most magnificent peak!
As for Ana Egge‘s credentials: well, she has had no less than Lucinda Williams and Steve Earle among her fans. Lucinda has dubbed her ‘a folk Nina Simone’. Steve liked Ana so much he produced her new album at Levon Helm’s Woodstock studio. She built her first guitar with help from her college astrology tutor – but the similarities with Brian May end there! Reminiscent at times of Kathleen Edwards (or Judie Tzuke?), Ana will also no doubt join Mike on a few Good Luck Mountain songs (contributing backing vocals as she does on the GLM album).
