3 Oct 2006, 0:20 de dystempermixtapes usually make themselves. you can usually tell right away if the song fits or not. and half of its usually already compiled in the back of your head. then you hit the anchor track one day, standing outside the arts building sipping on the third coffee of the day. the track that brings it all together, that you build the rest of the songs around.
this compilation was definitely one of the most fun to make, and showcases basically everything i like about music. the driving percussion that opens the first track. the icy crisp vocal work on the last one. the delicate keys work on tracks 10 and 14. the soothing instrumentalism of track 3. the funk of 6. the melody of 5. the seductive south american styels on 2 and 12. the cheeky girl on 8. and of course, alice russell.
this tape runs across most of the downbeat genre, to trip hop, funky breaks, and deep house. it skirts the edges of soul and jazz and ambient and ... well, you get the picture.
best enjoyed in the late evening, in between dinner and the party.

August - 2006 - Hey David, What's Happening With Your Label?
The Story of Luaka Bop
I get asked fairly often, "What's your record label up to?" I don't know quite how to answer, as I don't have much to do with Luaka Bop these days. A few years ago the label was distributed by Virgin, and, as had happened previously with Warner Bros., Virgin merged with or was absorbed by a larger company — in this case EMI — and there were firings and re-shufflings and our little label was once again out in the cold. Towards the end of the Virgin era I was putting in half days every day at the label — the office was in my house — for no money, and mostly it was a little like pushing a large rock up an ever-growing hill. Artists complained and asked what was going on and I felt bad and didn't have answers. I made shit up. I felt crappy. Read the rest here

25 Jul 2006, 16:38 de DipmediadesignsWhat criteria is used to select your music? It it emotion, energy or message? The way the music makes you feel, if it makes you happy when you are sad, or lets you chillout and relax or even get your party or your praise on. Do you find a song you like and then try to find artists with similar vocals, expressions, tracks or emotions. Do you listen to a wide variety or narrow swath or genre's. What moves you about the music you listen to and does it cause you to become creative or inspired, to create music or art of your own. Does the vibe you get from the music cause you to want to share the music you like with others or keep it all to yourself. Just want to get into your "music pshyche"

17 Jul 2006, 22:21 de DipmediadesignsIf you had to put together a playlist of your top 15 all time favorite joints, but you only had 10 slots, how difficult would it be. I mean you go thru all your songs in your current library and pick the ten you could play on reapeat from now till the end of time. To make it even more time consuming - atleast for me anyways- how would you arrange the songs from 1 to 15?
I seem to be having a hard time doing this at the moment. I want to make an all time cd...wierd right!!!

(For anyone who doesn't understand, the cartoon was a heads up that a dissenting opinion is up ahead. Some people think that the various lists that contain favorite bands A-Z and "Nirvana in my pants" and "how many times the word love appears in my music collection" are fun! but I think they suck donkey balls, most of them at least.)
My list of the bands mentioned in posts that contain no real content, as I come across them. (Btw, I found a group for people who like posting lists -- List your favourites.)
