It's good and fun! I always enjoyed this one and never understood the hate it received, especially considering that it followed The 2nd Law — a far less cohesive & consistent album as a whole.

Honestly, ignoring the cheesy concept and lyricism, this is pretty fantastic, musically this has so many things I love about Muse.

Knew the first half in it's entirety for ages already, but the whole album's really good! Not any worse than The Resistance for me!

i just listened to it for the first time as im slowly going through their discography, what the fuck??? why do yall call it one of their worst? this is currently number 3 for me behind absolution and black holes and revelations, with origin of symmetry being a *very* close 4th

é um álbum meio "Muse no modo automático" mas eles tiveram idéias muito boas aqui, e ainda quiseram agradar os fãs mais old school. Psycho, Reapers e The Handler já são clássicos pra mim

It's already 5 years old, and it still a decent one, really good release, for me right now last great album by Muse. Yeah, I love some tunes in ST, but it's just not that, sorry ST fans. Actually I came here to tell u quite a story. It was june 2015, Muse came to Saint-Petersburg, Russia for Greenfest. It was absolutely not the peak of my love for Muse, I had it maybe in 2012-2013. So after gig me and my friends came to the hotel where Muse stood, there were a lot of youngsters, u can imagine. Idk why but Muse were in our city for 3 whole days, they were taking trips anywhere. But we were near hotel all the time, except nights. I had 3 days off so I just had fun there. And one evening Muse quickly came out from hotel and went off. It was already dark and raining, so I said, maybe go home? But my friend said no! There were 5 people left only, so we decided to divide and waiting near main and back entrances. We exchanged our phone numbers in case we saw someone ----->

----> We took main entrance. After maybe 5 minutes only - a call!!!! We run headlong into the arch - here it is, dear. Matthew. With such a drunk smile. And his guard was like "come on come on faster guys. 1 minute only." I just had time to give him a marker with booklets of my CDs, it was OOs and BHAR. It was really dark out there, back entrance u know. I didn't have time to make a picture, but I saw someone doing it. So I literally squeezed into this picture. And after that MAtthew quickly went into hotel. I had this picture. It is reeeeeeeeally so fucking bad, that's why it makes me laugh every time I see it. It looks like we are at some really lame party. Here it is https://d.radikal.ru/d04/2006/6b/8cc7ebe699cc.jpg

Thank you, mate! God, I wrote it 3 years ago, this means my quick meeting with Matthew was... 8 years ago already. Scary stuff. My greetings to you from Limassol now. It's unbelievable, how everything changes. I was in Berlin twice, in 2016, when Radiohead was there for Lollapalooza, and in the beginning of January 2020, right before covid hits. Good ol' times. Both times I was in Berlin I went to the Cafe Ephraims near the river. Love this place and its atmosphere.

A pretty good album. Not something you listen to when you're down in the dumps, haha.

Why not? It definitely helps my depression by listening to an album about war, government takeover, and human drones (On a more serious note, the song Drones is pretty peaceful)

Yes, "Drones" is a fantastic song, it's melody betrays the darkness of the lyrics.

It just gets more and more offensive when you consider that there is so much more real oppression and suffering out there in life that is a lot more urgent and complicated than this 1984-ripoff masturbatory fantasy of a cartoonishly evil state brainwashing you (which Matt has been tapping into since OoS, but less and less subtly with each successive album, and what worked initially with ominous stand-alone songs like Ruled By Secrecy or deliberately camp, fun epics like KoC, just implodes here under the weight of its own pathetic, overused blandness.)

I currently have no idea if I like this album, so I have no reason to defend it. I'm only here because I am about to listen for the first time, and I was curious what people thought. I just find it odd that you've written lengthy back to back shouts criticizing the album as if it were a piece of literature. Your most listened to track of all time is a Patrick Wolf song I've never heard before. When I read the lyrics without the music, it comes off as something a dejected heartbroken preteen would write in their diary. Maybe that is a great song...and I'm willing to listen to it, and I might even love it. The fact that the lyrics make a bad poem isn't all that important, is it? Is it really that important to you? I don't see how.

Feel free to disagree. Your description of that song's lyrics isn't far off, they were assembled from diary scribblings and the like AFAIK and are by no means a materpiece but they are intensely personal, raw and vulnerable to an extent that it quite captivating (partly due to the fact that they're these "unedited" thoughts one has right when going through a breakup and might be ashamed of afterwards because they seem so pathetic.) That "human" thing that I miss in Drones is right there (also a fantastic string arrangement but that's beside the point.) I don't *at all* expect everyone to write intricate works of genius like Joanna Newsom whenthey write lyrics but I expect them to have something to say, and Drones unfortunately says nothing to me. Expresses no political sentiment that isn't completely trivial or much emotion that's effectively conveyed (I'd argue the former is pretty clear, the latter is obviously more a matter of personal perception.) Matt has done so much better.

I agree that it's better than The 2nd Law (some of which I find downright unlistenable) and appreciate that a lot of people find a lot of joy in it but I have to take issue with the idea that there is anything "controversial" about the themes. They are skin-crawlingly banal and insultingly stupid. Sorry but "war is bad, killing is bad, evil overlords are evil but we can overcome" is not even a concept. It's trite bullshit unworthy even of a teenager. If the album is trying to tell a story, it fails really badly. There is literally no exploration of any kind of internal struggle, morality (as in, moral dilemmas, not "bad things are bad, good things are good") or the hows and whys of the system they talk about. Ironically, the album about how bad it is to become a 'drone' is probably their least human and least relatable.

Nice job, guys. Great album. Love the band, love them live...I'm tired of all those detractors! I live in a world where I can't and won't quit their music! And "Drones" was such an eargasm intro live in Cologne! ♥

Totally uninspired... not what I'm used to with Muse. The lyrics are especially disappointing. It's like Matthew Bellamy is still in high school and just finished his first history class. [2] LOL

It's a decent album I should say. The riffs are awesome and just pure rock n roll. These might be the record a lot of you guys are asking for. So why's the hate? I think the only problem is the lyrics. Same with the music, the lyrics are too straight forward that it sounds too cheesy and pretentious. But I guess, that's what makes them Muse.

If they truly sold out, then why would they write this album that talks about such a controversial story concept like becoming a heartless killing machine that lacks empathy, which is essentially what happened to some people nowadays, especially with the shootings and wars in the Middle East going on today? No, I don't think so at all. So stop saying that Muse "sold out" because they haven't. End of story. Oh, all of this is just simply my opinion. Don't get upset because I have a different view of the album than you, because it's pointless and immature. But if you disagree, please be rational and civil about it. Thanks.

And to the people who say this album is uninspired and just mainstream as hell. Let me tell you something - you guys want Muse to go back to basics, and stop with the experimental stuff? This album is the answer. Straight forward rock and roll. Now you're saying that it sounds too mainstream and uninspired, and they should be more experimental? The heck do you guys want from these guys? They should be able to make whatever they want to make, as long as they are happy about it. And what do you mean that they're not mainstream before? They've always been mainstream, but they're one of the few popular bands that makes albums that stand above most of the rock bands nowadays. These guys are never afraid to take risks (hence 2nd Law and Resistance), but also know when to settle down and just write some simple rock songs, depending on their musical vision at the time. If Muse really sold out, which is ridiculous, then they would have songs talking about clubbing and sex. But have they? No.

In regards to the lyrics, I can understand that it was too straightforward, and sometimes can be a bit cheesy. But you know what, maybe Muse (mainly Matt Bellamy actually) wants to get the main message of the story out there, and be straightforward about it without poetic stuff to make it sound insightful and complex. Sometimes simple and direct lyrics can really bring forward a more powerful storyline than having complex poetic lyrics that Matt sometimes did in the past (not that those are bad, there are some really great songs with complex lyrics). Honestly, I could see a musical for this album, with some acting scenes in between.

After numerous spins of this album, I have gotta say that this album is their strongest ever since Black Holes & Revelations. Yes I just went there, kill me if you want to. This album is just fantastic. Where do I start? First of all... there are a lot of solid rock jams, and the riffs are just catchy as hell & really fun to play on guitar. Not one song for me to skip honestly. Even though Muse said that this album will be back-to-basics (guitar, bass and drums), you should know that they will inevitably bring some diversity even in an album like this. "Dead Inside" is groovy, catchy and undeniably sexy. "Mercy" and "Revolt" are poppy as hell, but still very enjoyable regardless. "The Globalist" is the behemoth of this album, and the heavy part is short for a reason you know, once you know the story of the song, not just musically. The title track could easily be merged with "The Globalist" honestly, because the transition made me felt it would be a continuation of the previous track.

new album isn't that good, it reminds me of Showbiz. They should try to go back to styles used in Absolution and Black Holes and Revelations, too mainstream now. What happened to the use of the piano and synths?
