picking up from where i left off in my unfocused ramblings

So Tonight That I Might See
first time around i said i was behind the times. this album serves as a good indication of that fact, seeing as it was released in '93. i couldn't quite figure out how to label Mazzy Star off the bat. kind of downtempo pop rock. kind of trancey. kind of 60's soulful rock. apparently that's called dreampop. this is as good of a word as any i guess; it's almost lullaby music. tender in an eyes-half-open sort of way with just enough force behind it to keep you going. vocally pleasant, but occasionally a bit too much so without any defining edge. musically competent but any sort of extended instrumentalizing drags things down from solmen to just plain boring. the strongest tracks are placed carefully and stand out as dividing lines in a series of hills and valleys, which kept me from getting numbed to the positives of the sound. so, good job on that one, studio technicians of 13 years ago. anyway, take what there is to enjoy and move on. …
