Essential progressive metal albums
22 Ago 2011, 21:25 de Neue_regel_
As Frank Zappa said: "most rock journalism is people who can't write, interviewing people who can't talk, for people who can't read." Extremely true, if you ask me. However, I'll try my best in this little journal role. Of course, there are thousands upon thousands of music genres. Nevertheless, only a few can boast and entail a sheer bombastic splendour without simultaneously losing any edge of intellectual honesty and rigor. Definitely, progressive metal is one of those. From wiki: " Progressive metal (sometimes known as prog metal) is a subgenre of heavy metal, which blends the powerful, guitar-driven sound of metal with the complex compositional structures, odd time signatures, diverse philosophical lyrics and intricate instrumental playing of progressive rock. Many progressive metal bands are also influenced by jazz fusion and classical music. Like progressive rock songs, progressive metal songs are typically much longer".

"You need to expand your musical horizons."

I hate hearing this. I really do, especially when it comes from someone who listens to all the same stuff. Yeah, I listen to metal. I listen to a lot of metal: death metal, black metal, sludge metal, doom metal, avant garde metal. Why is that such a bad thing? It's not the only thing I listen to, but other genres get the backseat while metal gets to ride shotgun.
Why is it bad when a metalhead listens to primarily metal but it's perfectly acceptable for rap/country/pop/electronic/et cetera to listen to primarily/just those genres?
And it's not just that people feel the need to tell me I need to expand my musical horizons, it's that they go out of their way to tell me. It's one thing when I say, "Hey, do you know anything that's not metal I might like?" Or when my girlfriend goes, "I think you might like this band, check 'em out sometime." But for a random stranger to tell me that I should expand my musical horizons… -

BORKNAGAR "Universal" Review
25 Feb 2010, 1:46 de LadyElvina
First off, i'm not a musical expert, nor can i write educated musical reviews full of proper technical terms even if i do have musical education and background... This is more of a fan review based mostly on how i perceive things, what kind of imagery the music invokes in my mind and what kind of feelings it stirs. I try to stay as objective as possible but after all, all reviews can be boiled down to the matter of taste.
The overall impression: this is one of the weakest records Borknagar has ever put out. There are no tracks at all that would make me go wow. Not even My Domain, though it must be the best (complete) song on the album. Every track has some kind of flaws, it's all full of "would've, should've, could've" (more about this later). The songwriting lacks beautiful epic moments, it is still very much Borknagar but it just doesn't sound very special. Then there is something else wrong what i cannot yet place. Something makes it sound unharmonized and chaotic all the way. … -
Mad Madness
8 Feb 2010, 18:13 de Mindtheabyss
The Madness and the Damage Done
by the Norwegian Shining on the album Blackjazz is criminally insane. And that my friend is The Understatement Of The Year Period.
The air raid siren, psychotic vocals tinged with obsessive compulsive behaviour disorder type music, followed undoubtedly by repetitive strain injuries, swept me up from the first second and I doubt I'll be bored with this some time soon. Spasmic, frantic, hypnotic and barely controlling themselves at times from throwing instruments in the air and running into the streets on all fours, and yet they do control themselves in a machinelike fashion, making this all the more intense. These talented people seem to be of their meds and all the better for it. Epileptic people stay away from this one. It pounds, it hurts.
And proper lyrics to boot, I love it.
The track I No Longer Know If I Am Mad by the band the Age of Silence is a very good cooling down song. Puts things back into perspective again. -
