Interesting and ultimately irrelevant fact. Toshiko Akiyoshi appeared on the March 18, 1956 weekly episode of "What's My Line," an American game show that aired Sunday nights from 1950-1967. (The show aired last night on the Game Show Network). The panel on the show had almost guessed her occupation when the time for the show ran out. Akiyoshi was at that time a student at Berklee in Boston, although she had been performing professionally for a few years by then. The show was unusually filled with well-known contestants that night: Jacques Plante, who had just been awarded the Vezina Trophy for best goalie in hockey, "Mrs. Jules Lederer," better known to millions as advice columnist Ann Landers, and the "mystery guest" Cyd Charisse. Still, the mood of the show was somber that night. Just the night before, St. Patrick's Day, long time panelist and beloved American humorist Fred Allen died suddenly of a heart attack while on his customary midnight Manhattan stroll.
