Restless as a DJ and adventurous in his productions, Illum Sphere, formally known as Ryan Hunn, is both an integral player in the Manchester scene and a unique presence on the global stage.
His club night Hoya:Hoya, founded in 2008 with Jonny Dub, has steadily expanded its reputation in and outside Manchester: they now boast Éclair Fifi, fellow field artist Jon K, Lone, and Krystal Klear as resident DJs, as well as mic skills from Chunky and visuals by EMN. The unpredictable music schedule projected by the hotbed of talent draws an array of radio stations, festivals and record labels from outside Manchester and allows Illum Sphere as a DJ to showcase his effortless ability between hip hop, psych, and boogie amongst others.
It’s partly through this reach that Illum Sphere has also attracted international attention. He’s played from Low End Theory in LA to Sydney, Australia, and besides releases on Manchester’s own Fat City had output on Martyn’s 3024, Pinch’s Tectonic, Young Turks and is now signed to Ninja Tune. His recent return to Ninja Tune sees the release of his second full-length album, after his debut Ghosts of Then and Now. The second album moves further in the direction hinted by his 12” releases ‘Spectre Vex’ and ‘Second Sight’, both also on Ninja Tune, as well as more closely tied to his highly regarded mixes for fabriclive and Dekmantel.
The shift taken by Illum Sphere has completely bled into his acclaimed DJ sets – that have previously won him fans in Thom Yorke and Ben UFO – leaving him poised now more than ever to delve into a new phase.
