Crichton began playing guitar as a teenager and became active in the mid-1970s Toronto live music scene, performing frequently in clubs with Led Zeppelin cover bands. In 1976, he joined his brother Jim, Michael Sadler, and Steve Negus in forming the band Pockets, which was later renamed Saga. The band has enjoyed over 40 years of success and is recognized as one of Canada's prominent rock acts alongside Rush and Triumph.
