people like to downplay clapton's contribution to rock music and his influence as guitarist but the matter of fact is he is a unique musician with an easily distinguishable style who had crazy influence on the the art of guitar at the initial stage of his career and years after that. god dammit srv and evh cited him as influence which is all you have to know to conclude that he's one of the greats.

Love him, but it seems to me, he definitely needed somebody to bounce back or give him a little direction. The best stuff he ever did was in collaboration with other crazy talented people. Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, Steve Winwood, George Harrison, Duane Allman. His solo stuff for the most part lacks the edge of Cream and Derek. It's mellow and enjoyable at best. At worst, it can be really lame.
