2 - The Ting Tings – We Started Nothing
As soon as the drums join the guitars on “Great DJ” the track surges, and listeners get hooked on We Started Nothing. Unlike so many pop acts this year, scrobbles for English band The Ting Tings have been high across the album, and the response to the opening salvo of singles from the Manchester duo has been massive.
Katie White and Jules De Martino initially met at Leeds University, and formed The Ting Tings after separate music projects went sour, leaving the pair with a mutual distrust of the industry. Playing a series of private parties at Salford's Islington Mill helped generate a buzz for the group, the shows becoming an industry-wide hot ticket. They managed to court mainstream audiences while retaining 'indie' credibility with early sessions for alternative music station 6 Music, their infectious electropop impressive even this early in their career.
The Ting Tings will be appearing across Australia and New Zealand in the early months of 2009 as part of the Big Day Out festival, and hope to record new material later in the year.Play The Ting Tings Next on Last.fm Best Of 2008 So who are the spectacular hipsters at the top spot?
