Near the medical campus of VCU, The National is a restored theater that is used as a small/medium venue. Drinks are served as well as some diverse and well prepared “bar food.” The food is prepared by the restaurant next door called Gibson’s.

The National has a capacity of 1500 people. Most shows are general admission for the open floor and balcony seats. The front part of the balcony is reserved for VIP’s. The venue has excellent sight lines since the main floor slopes towards the stage.

The sound system is a state of the art digital system that usually makes the bands sound their best. The theater has been restored wonderfully with a muted color palette to allow attention to be held by the stage performers. There are a lot of bathrooms and bars scattered throughout.

The National is strict about recreational drug use, stage diving, and underage drinking. But they wil help you get a ride home in a cab if you’re too drunk.

Dude where do you go where they don't put X's on your little underage hands?

Awesome venue, but the security seemed kinda douchey. And those giant X's on my hands so I couldn't drink were annoying.

The old feel of The National is awesome. Acoustically the sound is pretty good. I can't wait for the finished product!

Love this venue. Richmond is finally trying to come up and bring something to richmond making richmond worth a trip. I believe they are only getting started. The longer its open before you know it BIGGER artists will be making appearences. As long as there is a demand for it- it will happen. CenterStage shall be quite nice as well.

The venue itself is quite nice. But they don't allow crowd surfing and like, rough moshing usually gets broken up. I saw the Summer Slaughter tour there on the 29th of june. the crowd was pretty dead because of that. Alley katz's moshing gets a lot more intense.

National is great, still getting the finishing touches done back stage, but a fine addition to RVA. Twisters? long gone, punk shows are at houses mostly these days, or Alley Katz.

Im moving to Richmond from San Diego, I used to remember a small little place on Grace Street I went to called Twisters and across the street (sorta) was the Biograph, helping Inquisition and Avail gain minor notoriety. Its been over a decade since I have lived in VA and would really like a good response as too the scene or whatever the PC name is. Actually, you can also email me at rasotwoonethre
