The Odeon Theatre originally opened as the “Paramount Theater” on 4th September 1937. It was one of several “Paramount Theaters” built by Paramount Pictures in major cities in the United Kingdom. The Birmingham Paramount had a seating capacity of 2,441.

It was taken over by Odeon Theatres and re-named “Odeon” in August 1942. The huge seating capacity served well as a venue for concerts as well as films for some 44 years.

In May 1987 it closed down and was converted into a conference centre, which left Birmingham without a viable, medium-sized concert venue until the ”Academy” opened in 2000. After some 12 months the owners again refitted the building and reopened it as a cinema and conference venue, this time with two screens.

It underwent further work in the 1990’s to convert it into an 8 screen cinema.
