Housed in a converted terraced house in the residential area of De Grey Street, this is an extremely unique venue, and not just because of the way it looks, but because of its maverick free spirited nature too. Established in 1983 and surviving until this very day, the club is one of the last truly independent music venues in the United Kingdom.

It celebrates it 25th anniversary in October 2009. Since its opening its doors it has played host to thousands of live bands over the years, including local acts and touring bands. Several of the bands have gone on to become household names, including Happy Mondays, The Housemartins, Oasis, PJ Harvey, Pulp, Radiohead.

Uncaring corporate profiteering has sucked the soul from most venues. The Adelphi is the perfect counter point to this. Rock 'n' roll was never meant to be the sanitised and controlled gelding it has become today. The Adelphi rebels where other venues capitulate. Venues where notable music is played, should be like the people that inhabit them - blemished, flawed, and all the more human and better for it. I don't care if it's not clean or not - when I visit, I'm not going there for a meal, I'm going because I want to hear good music. The Adelphi is easily the best venue I have ever visited. To entirely contradict Esilly below me, it easily has the best atmosphere of any club I have ever been to. It is tiny, sure, and admittingly a bit of a dark, damp dump, but I love it!

What a dump this place is! I've never felt so uncomfortable at a gig than I did when I saw the World/Inferno at the Adelphi!
