Serving a rather unique function in the Pittsburgh music scene, the Garfield Artworks is located in an up-and-coming area of the East End called the Penn Avenue Arts Corridor, where many galleries,
arts organizations, and artist/musician residents are lined up along ten or so blocks.

The Artworks is a gallery and performance space which hosts over a dozen concerts per month,
monthly visual-art exhibit openings, a film series (called Jefferson Presents) on the last weekend of
each month, and occasional events such as poetry, theater, and workshops. It’s a long room

with white walls and a stage and PA system at one end. Concert attendances range from a handful of people to over 150, depending on the bands, whose genres from experimental/electronic and jazz/improv to alt-folk, indie rock, indie hip-hop, and punk.

Most music events feature smaller-scale national touring acts with local openers, and are always open to all ages. The atmosphere is informal and DIY, since the bands are easily able to interact and mingle with audience members. Shows end fairly early - usually well before midnight - which makes it easy to access the venue through the 54C and 86B bus lines that run to Downtown and Oakland.
