Located just south of Union Square, Webster Hall is part of the Bowery Presents music enterprise that has enjoyed a steady rate of expansion throughout lower Manhattan and Brooklyn in recent years. While the venue markets itself as a music venue and a late-night party spot, anyone seeking a dance-club atmosphere will likely be disappointing by the disjointed network of hollow spaces buried beneath the main concert ballroom. However, Webster’s Grand Ballroom, surrounded by a voluminous concert stage and two well-managed full-service bars, is a delightful place to catch some of the world’s best live music acts.

A U-shaped balcony hovers high above the main deck of the ballroom. Together the two spaces provide excellent views of the action on stage to a surprisingly large audience when at full capacity (the entire venue can accommodate more than 2,000 guests). However, the venue’s right wall dog-legs away from the main ballroom floor in order to provide space for the second large-scale bar, and attendees who are positioned in the far-right portion of the crowd can easily lose sight of the stage when the venue is at full.

Bowery Presents operates its various venues like a musical assembly line. Young bands are first tested in its smaller venues like the Mercury Lounge and the Music Hall of Williamsburg. More seasoned bands are then promoted to the 500+ capacity Bowery Ballroom. Bands that ultimately survive this gauntlet are awarded gigs at Webster Hall.
