That Boy Can Dance

13 Nov 2009, 15:57

Thu 12 Nov – Friendly Fires

I was going to title this review 'Coming Under Friendly Fires' after the Pet Shop Boys lyric in their song 'Friendly Fire' but I then realsied that it would sound a bit odd on about three levels.

Although the venue is still not my favourite I must say that the boys inspired a festival atmosphere at 53 Degrees last night as they laucnhed into 'Lovesick' and transformed many of their tracks into a extended spectacular samba, conga inducing rave up. he whole show was a highlight but as ever for me was the bliss of 'Kiss Of Life' , the self-deluded tinge of the beautiful 'Paris' and 'Skeleton Boy'. And boy could Ed dance!

I had the fortune to meet the boys in Manchester while they signed their debut album at HMV, having seen them previously at Manchester Academy. Nice, wholesome fellas. You'd let them take your daughter out. They'd be the kind of guys who would ask your permission to ask for the said daughter's hand in marraige. Of course I mean this in a caring way. There's nothing inoffensive about them on the stage however. During the boisterous crowd reaction, where beer was being thrown, where the crowd was being surfed by a few over-ecited tossers who probably just wanted a story to tell their mates after they were drop kicked out of the venue, Ed thought nothing of engulfing himself among the front row, only moments after getting a splash of beer on himself. A kind of good intentioned 'fuck you' to the arses who thought that getting him to do a Morrissey would be cool.
