About Me

I was born in South Yorkshire and my ancestors for generations were coal miners.
I'm a graphic designer, specialising in logo and branding design based in Buckinghamshire. Husband to Hayley who is Chief Sub-Editor on a woman's weekly magazine and father to twin 12 year old daughters. Whilst studying for my BA Hons in graphic design in the Midlands I was entertainments officer and a DJ. On graduating I found it nye on impossible to get a decent position as a graphic artist so went full time d-jaying. Had a great time, earned a load of money for the next 10 years but spent it all. Tried (unsuccessfully) to get into mainstream radio as a presenter .. came close on a couple of occasions, but opted to take up an offer to be the in-house designer for a publisher in Milton Keynes. Moved on from there after three years to become studio head at a design and print company in Bucks where I remained for two weeks short of ten years. Decided to go self employed, set up as a sole trader under the name of PM Graphics. Eight years later I was offered a partnership in a design agency and the two companies were merged into one, Streamline Publicity. In December 2002, my business partner contracted the MSRA bug after a routine heart operation and was in a coma until he died three months later. His widow became the major shareholder in the company and decided to sell up; the company, however, was basically the client list and me.
Although now an employee, the new owner left me to run the business so I could continue to work flexi-time and enable me to look after the girls outside of school hours. Three years later, the lease was up on our premises and the owners decided against relocating so I was made redundant. Thankfully, I was presented with the client list along with my redundancy payment.
So, in July 2006 I started trading as PM Graphics once again, although I'm currently repositioning myself and will now trade as Paul Mansell Graphcs - not a huge change, but hopefully sounding a little less corporate.
In the summer of 2007 I finally succeeded in fulfilling my desire to become a regular broadcaster, albeit for just 28 days. MarlowFM came on the air for the first time leading up to the annual Town Regatta & Festival in June 2007. I did the 9.00pm to midnight slot Mon-Thurs, a kids breakfast show 7.00am 'til 9.00am and a Folk & World Music programme, along with my brother in law, each Saturday night 6.00pm until 9.00pm. We've subsequently completed another successful RSL this summer and OfCOM awarded us a 5 year FM licence on my birthday in September which is the best present I could have possibly had.
