my kid is more indie than yours
2 Feb 2006, 04:11
ok. i dont know that the subject is entirely accurate but my 7 year old is pretty damn versed in whats NOT mainstream. im grooming her to appreciate the underappreciated and truly talented.
my daughter is absolutely amazing. shes inherited her mothers impeccable musical taste (no she doesnt listen to the rubbish on the radio). she asked me to post her list of fav recent tracks (no joke).
so without further adieu, ladies and gentlemen, i present my kids TOP TRACKS:
The Boy Least Likely To
"i see spiders when i close my eyes" and "be gentle with me"
Cazals
"poor innocent boys"
Fiery Furnaces
"sing for me"
five o clock heroes
"run to her"
IMA Robot
"dynomite"
The Libertines
"what katie did"
Mando Diao
"white wall"
Menswear
"cant smile without you" and "hollywood girl"
The Rakes
"we are the animals"
The Rocks
"we got it"
Spinto Band
"oh mandy"
Stellastarr
"my coco"
The Subways
"i want to hear what youve got to say" and "rock and roll queen"
Sultans of Ping F.C.
"wheres me jumper" and "turnip fish"
TV on the Radio
"dreams"
The Young Knives
"kramer vs kramer"
ha.

2 Feb 2006, 04:19Good girl!
I'm really worried that when I have kids that they'll hate the music me and my girlfriend like (we have very similar taste). I wouldn't want to force it down their throats, but you've got to steer them in the right direction, haven't you? -

3 Feb 2006, 03:58:embarassed: i only know three of the bands :S
ps - are us sure u want ur 7 yr old to be listening to some of those bands... I dont know half those bands but i wouldnt let my (non-existant) kid to listen to anything toooo bad.
i mean i hope she doesnt get too into bands like the libertines. Pete Doherty got arrested twice in the last two weeks.. not exactly 'idol' material if u get me
I understand u cant exactly moderate music (theyd hate u) and dont try to hook her on shakira or something but i doubt u want your daughter to end up like some of the weird emo kids or loser slipknow fans
Ps - I like the new subways song
Pps - warnings aside - ur daughter does have good taste lol -

3 Feb 2006, 05:12hmm interesting. you see, ive taken my daughter to gigs (when its all ages), art shows and parties with me since she was 2. shes seen some crazy sh*t, i cant lie. but the thing is, she can determine right from wrong.
as a matter of fact, when she hears me swearing/cussing/saying bad words, shell charge me a quarter. and yes, shes make quite a living off of it.
meanwhile, im not encourage her to listen to songs with loadsa swear words. i mean, for crying out, listen to that horsecrap song by gwen stefani. i dont know what its called but she spells bananas and proceeds to say this sh*t is bananas blah blah blah. all the kids at my kids school sings that - uncensored and all!!!
nonetheless, yes. my child hears swear words in the songs and she probably (behind my back) repeats it. doesnt bother me much, truth be told. could be worse... much worse.
i read an article the other and screamed out, aww stupid dohertys done gone gotten himself arrested AGAIN!, my daughter replies, mommy. its obvious he needs help. can i listen to 'boys in the band' again?
and my daughter says merci for your compliment. x -

::not something most adults can handle (ive certainly been guilty of it as im sure most ppl have) and it would certainly tougher in the eyes of a child.
>>as a matter of fact, when she hears me swearing/cussing/saying bad words, shell charge me a quarter. and yes, shes make quite a living off of it.
::lmao when i read this i wasnt sure whether it was bad or whether I should pat you on the back for a good deed. It is a creative approach ill grant you that and im curious as to how well that works.

::oh so true. unfortunately. At least shes got strong family support at home from u which sadly many children dont.
>>and my daughter says merci for your compliment. x
::np well deserved she has arguably better taste than I do. I bet most listeners would say so lol.
PS - Im canadian so I say merci beaucoup aussi to your daughter ;) -

18 Feb 2006, 19:25Just because someone listens to a band doesn't mean they become clones of one band member. True, Pete gets in a lot of trouble, but his songs don't encourage any of it. 'What a Waster', a sort of ironic song, is about him being fed up with Kate's drug problems. Not sure if it's a good song for children if you're someone who worries about swearing, but really (im 14 right now) kids can pick up swearing on their own quite early..i'd know..
Awsome how your child likes all of it though, congrats on raising a good kid

29 Mar 2006, 03:20once she inherits this laptop, ill set up an account for her. she wont be posting any journals of course.
currently, her favourite bands are sultans of ping, art brut, the rakes and the boy least likely to and its evident in my charts since shes constantly screaming mom! i want to hear MODERN ART! it makes me want to rock out... no joke.
ill make certain to hide her hilary duff and gwen stefani collection from the last.fm radar though. -

But she should play them if she likes them - I mean, even I like to hollaback girl once in a while ;) -

29 Mar 2006, 04:42oh come on brookesy. gwen needs to take a rest like madonna. (isnt she expecting a baby anyday now?) she had her hayday in the 90s and should now retire her bottle of peroxide and red lipstick to the annoying pop hall of fame.
this is sooo LA: i saw gavin (gwens hubby) last week during my night out and said, hey daddy. he smiled and wink. i was too pissed to take a picture of him. i probably wouldve fallen over anyway. pfft. -
