barefoot on the beach, campfires at night
16 Nov 2006, 02:30
this is not so much a mixtape as things i've just been listening to on repeat, over and over, for the last couple of weeks. i try not to add songs by the same artist on one compilation, but like i said, this isn't really a mixtape. like most of the music i end up really getting into, they were all found randomly. it's really folky-barefoot-rootsy type shit, mostly vocals over top an acoustic guitar and not much inbetween. good for the soul.

Paolo Nutini was the result of wandering around youtube, and finding a bunch of videos of him doing a cover of gnarls barkley's "crazy". i predict absolute fucking hugeness here -- on the level of jack johnson when 'flake' came out. this dude is just incredible. definitely my favourite recent "find". this guy's already getting medium airplay over in britain, but nobody has heard of him over here yet. i suggest you cop his album (not availible over here until next year) and say that you heard of him first to impress the cutey patootie blondey mcblonderson in comparative politics. kid's only 19, but he's pretty much scotland's answer to Al Green.
this is the video that rocked my world (i actually stole it from someone else who wouldn't allow embedding so that the rest of you could see -- seriously, the shit i fucking do for you guys).
i discovered this Brett Dennen guy, who nobody has ever heard of, while sitting in the theatre waiting for borat to start. some commercials have some of the most incredible music -- remember the volkwagen cabrio commercial that featured Nick Drake's pink moon and basically made everyone a fan of him years after he died? a rogers personal tv recorder (canada's version of tivo) was airing, and the soundtrack was on of his tracks -- the one who loves you the most. i predict some big things for this guy when the single is released.
Schuyler Fisk is this adorable girl from california with a guitar and a pretty voice. the song is actually just a demo that i stole from her site. don't sue me baby. we can get married.
Bedouin Soundclash is another one of those canadian bands that just made it big. they have been huge here for the last year (and huge on the college campus scene for years before) and are lately getting tonnes of international attention. for pothead bob marley fans out there who are really sick of Matisyahu -- hasn't that motherfucker irritated the fuck out of you all already?
James Morrison, Ray Lamontagne, Amos Lee... for Ben Harper/Jack Johnson fans in denial. the "barfly" track by ray lamontagne... is... just... wow. best enjoyed the first moment you notice her across the dancefloor sipping on a drink with an umbrella. it's off his new record.
