UFO - 10.03.07 Stodoła, Warszawa

11 Mar 2007, 12:54

UFO's 'Force it' and 'Phenomenon' were one of the albums that introduced me to hard rock of the 70's and I loved them from the very beginning. I've always wanted to see the band live, and though it's hard to imagine them without Michael Schenker, yesterday's gig absolutely blew me away.

Vinnie Moore turned out to be not only a wonderful guitarist, but also a great showman with awesome looks and this cheerful atittude that is so important on stage. He didn't copy Schenker, while performing solos his own way, he also played some of the original themes and the effect was incredibly good. He combined great technical abilities with amazing melodies. He enjoyed himself, sang, and had this wonderful contact with the audience. He's made such a big impression on me that there's no doubt he has become my new guitar hero.

The setlist wasn't a big surprise, apart from the fact that they didn't play too many songs (sadly, there was also no encores). Nonetheless, the show lasted nearly 2 hours. They played only one song from the new album - 'Hard Being Me' and we didn't hear 'Natural Thing' nor 'Out in the street'. Apart from the rest of the live album 'Strangers in the night' they played 'Fighting Man'( from 'Sharks') and 'Baby Blue' (from 'You are here'). It was only 14 songs, but each one contained a long and wonderful solo and therefore we shouldn't complain about the length of the gig nor the rather short setlist.

Phil Mogg.. was he really that drunk? I don't quite believe it, and even if it's true it was rather funny.. The important thing is that he did his job, sang well and contributed to the whole show by his odd (in a good way) behaviour and attitude. He spoke in between the songs, and things he said seemed to be really funny, but unfortunately I couldn't catch all of it due to rather bad sound ( or me being deaf )

However the overall sound wasn't that bad, the good thing is that it wasn't too loud. Vinnie's guitar sounded great, I couldn't hear Paul Raymond though, but probably that's how it meant to be ;) No bass either, but at least that's not the end of the world.

Next member that made a great show was the bass player - Pete Way. His striped black and white pants combined with my beloved Firebird and awesome moves and poses just blew me away ;) During the long Rock Bottom solo he was just laying on the floor ;)

All in all the gig was incredible, and not only musically, but also visually. They gave an excellent show, and I wouldn't change a thing in it. I have to admit that I didn't expect it to be that good. I just wanted too see them and hear the songs live, I'd never thought they can rock the audience like that.

The only sad thing is that the world forgot about such an important band in rock music. The audience consisted mostly of people around 40-50, and there was almost no young people. UFO's one of those essential hard rock bands, and they did have moments of fame. Only this fame faded away during all this time.. And looking on last.fm statistics is even more depressing.. Nevertheless I'm happy that I had the chance to get to know them, and I recommend UFO to each hard rock fan, because they're really worth listening to.

UFO was one of the first bands I remember really liking. A friend turned me on to Phenomenom around 1974 and it's always been my favourite UFO album. I recently bought the remastered version = audiorgasm. SPACE CHILD...

Phil Mogg seems to be drunk all the time, he was like that in Prague, too :) And Pete Way kept telling him to shut up, cause he was really saying a lot of bullshit, but it was fun :) Vinnie spoiled Doctor Doctor riff with some sort of solo and for that he'll burn in hell :) But he's a really good shredder. About his looks... Well with his curly hair and generic face he looks like all those fast guitarists (Steve Morse, Steve Vai, Yngwie... :) And you didn't hear Paul's keyboards or guitar? It'd be a shame if it was the first case... Anyway I agree that they're vastly underrated (at least their incarnation with Schenker) and I was by far youngest member in the audience as well :)

I didn't hear Paul's guitar at all, only the keyboards:) it's probably because I stood in front of Vinnie. Was Phil looking for something all the time in Prague as well? :D because we're still not sure what this thing was... ;P

You didn't hear or see anything except Vinnie, cause your eyes and other senses were fixed on him :) Maybe he was looking for... stability :) And another beer, he had there some bottles of the worst czech brand :)

lol, somehow that's true about Vinnie ;) Phil was drinking Carlsberg on our gig.. I can't understand why. Most band drink our polish beer Tatra ;) And about Monkey Puzzle - I think it's different from You are here, and personally I love it, but you know... it depends on your expectations :) I don't want to bear all the responsibility.. ;) you can always just give it a try though :)

No offense, but I think I know exactly, why he didn't drink your polish beer Tatra :) And this is a weird association, but you reminded me to put Wishbone Ash in my mp3 player, as I hadn't known them until I saw your chart (shame on me...) Just one smiley, wow! :) Oh shit...

What do you mean about Tatra?;) well I know it's awful ;P but you know, bands often drink it while playing in Poland :P Wishbone Ash is a fantastic band! :) I hope you liked them. ( Just try to count my smileys;) )

That is called a review from a woman's point of view and is not worse than a review from a man's point of view ;)

Saw the videos, finally. They're great, but... What a bunch of old farts :) Vinnie is good but sometimes he manages to piss me off with those solos - they get pretty boring after a while, that's why Michael is so superior :) Thanks a lot, it reminded me the show in Prague and made me feel rockin'! :)

old farts, lol ;) that was a good one :D but Phil was just hilarious!!! :) I have to disagree about the part about Vinnie!! I'm not saying his solos are better than those of Schenkers, but he absolutely doesn't piss me off! I'm amazed during each solo equally.... I've been listening a lot to his solo albums lately, and I'm stunned.. I'm happy you liked them :)

Great, well considered and thorough review. Congrats! Phil got shitfaced, but that's what r'n'r is about. I remeber him being tipsy in Empik just before the show. Pete was amazing that night, he made us laugh during the whole gig. Remember when Vinnie was playing one of this extended solos? And what did Pete? He laid down, and stayed in this position till Vinnie stopped. Hilarious:))) It was a fantastic show. A pity they left out the new songs...
