Curt Weldon, Preventing Genocide in Darfur

Amidst the international outcry and pressure to end the atrocities against the native population of Darfur in Sudan, and in line with his fellow Members of Congress who are intent on stopping one of the worst human tragedies of modern times, Congressman Curt Weldon co-sponsored H R 3127 - Darfur Peace and Accountability Act of 2006. This resolution imposes sanctions against individuals responsible for Darfur genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity; supports measures for the protection of civilians and humanitarian operations, and supports peace efforts in the Darfur region of Sudan. The resolution also blocks the assets and denies visas and entry to any individual and associates responsible for acts of genocide, war crimes, or crimes against humanity in Sudan, as well as considers imposing sanctions against certain identified commanders and coordinators who perpetrated acts of genocide against the innocent Darfur population.

This action, together with massive international pressure resulted in the may 2006 partial peace treaty and cessation of hostilities between the Sudanese government and several Darfurian rebel groups who fought to protect the innocent population.

Congressman Weldon signed the bipartisan letter to the House conferees in support of the Sudan funding in the Emergency Supplemental bill. As Congress begins the conference process for H.R. 4939, the Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Act for Defense, the Global War on Terror, and Hurricane Recovery of 2006, the letter urged House Committee on Appropriations and Foreign Operations Subcommittee to maintain the funding level for Sudan that was approved by both houses of Congress. The funding included in H.R. 4939 for the African Union Mission in Sudan will allow them to strengthen their forces on the ground and more effectively protect civilians.
