About Me

http://cams.vox.com

The first artist I really remember getting into was Adam and the Ants. I also enjoyed listening to my dad's Beatles and Abba collections, with the odd bit of Johnny Cash thrown in for good measure. The first album I ever bought was Adam & the Ants' Prince Charming and the first single was a double A side by the Specials (Ghost Town / Rat Race). The first concert I saw was Genesis Invisible Touch tour in 87.

I listened to UK chart music through the 80s and into the early 90s and started listening to alternative indie stuff in the early 90s. I started hitting the nightclubs in the late 80s and caught the whole Madchester scene. I pretty much avoided the rave scene when it emerged in the UK and instead got into the Wonderstuff, PWEI, etc. (basically the grebo scene.) I also avoided the grunge scene that took over and, by the time Brit pop hit, I was getting into playing acoustic guitar and listening to nutty Indian stuff and "World music" that my Indian flatmate played. I kind of got out of the mainstream loop for a while then and didn't really get into it until my early/mid 30s. I've since filled in a lot of gaps in my collection (Oasis, Smiths, R.E.M., U2).

Bands/Artists I rate in the naughties include Muse, Snow Patrol, Sons & Daughters, Los Campesinos, Regina Spektor, Elbow. It seems pretty much like a golden age at the time of writing (August 2007) and the music scene seems very healthy right now (after the slow demise of the Pop Idol bollocks). It's a great time to be a music fan, particularly because of the Internet (sites like last.fm, music sharing sites like Vox, etc.) and the fact that DRM is failing (at last!)).
