and my theory is that she gets such savage hate not just because people think she sucks, there are many artists people look at and just say "meh, that sucks" and move on, it's that somehow lana was supposed to be something like the antithesis of modern shallow pop music with her nostalgia-obsessive imagery and supposively obscure roots and such, but then it turns out to be the same shit in spirit as all the aforementioned pop music, even if it actually sounds different. it's like if i see a razor blade it doesn't affect me, but if someone hands me an apple with a razor inside it, i may get much more annoyed. lana's carefully calculated indie appeal, sound, production, and even voice are the apple hiding that razorblade. (which in this case clearly is a metaphor for generic shallow pop music aesthetics)

there is a difference between ambition to make good music and ambition to become a star. i have no problem if she gets shit on for the latter (which is the case) all the hate she gets just gets her more publicity anyway, i really don't think her label minds.

that's a silly reason to like someone. size of fanbase is completely unrelated to quality, you should know this, just look at the box office every week. ghost rider 2 is gonna have a big enough fanbase to make a fuckton of money but so what? and yeah, one of the strongest criticism i've heard of lana's music was from females that are annoyed by how shallow and insulting lana's whole "rebel" persona is on that particular record. it would be less silly maybe in the 50s.

what is the hipster community? i was referencing serious places that review music for quality. even shitty rolling stone doesn't like her, and they like everything poopy these days. while stuff like whether her voice is good, whether the fact that she is fake as shit even matters, or how good the music actually is(string arrangements and such, which are prob the only parts that are nice on her tracks) are debatable topics, there is just no way around the horrendous lyrics. :( i just don't know how you don't get bothered by someone who makes women look so retarded, there are so many good female vocalists out there, even pj harvey...
