... I LOVE Manowar, I think the term True Metal and the phrase Death To False Metal are ridiculous in a way. Most people know that Manowar have a Reputation, and the above terms are exactly that. But...
Despite their image, Manowar play the music they love, and they live up to it. On stage they perform this image. But for me it's not important, it's only a stage show. What's really important is the music. And that's all that counts.
I have seen Manowar for the first time in 1984, and I must say, after seeing them in 2003, Eric Adams is one of the top 3 vocalists in the whole Metal genre! His voice has not lost any emotion or power.
And THAT is TRUE Metal... not sales or image.

First, I'd like to point out that I have only been listening to metal since April 16 of 2005, which was when I converted to the world of metal. My first metal album was Iron Maiden's Edward the Great. Based on what I have heard and read, the phrase True Metal applies to all of the sub-genres of metal you listed, (power, thrash, death, black, NW0BHM), as well as the genre of folk / viking metal. Hell, in an interview, Manowar even commented that black metal was definetely, True metal, just a different kind.
