Hey good to hear from you - I am still playing daily and listening to lots of music. I am in middle of redoing a total music/drum/media room in my home which will serve as my practice space as well as music listening room and PS3, movies etc. I am almost finished building a totally over the top stereo system with my own DIY speakers designed to play at a volume level loud enough to "keep up with" my drum kit. I get sick of practicing with headphones so having a powerful stereo to play at live volume levels for practice will be a lot of fun and a nice change.

Metallica is the only band I REALLY REALLY like, the other's are just some metal bands I listen to occasionally ;)

One last thing - I see you have been listening to some Planet X - what do you think? I go back to their CDs over and over, love the live CD (Live From OZ) as well as Quantum which I think has the best sound production of all of their releases. I cannot get over Virgil's playing - rare combo of technical prowess and great feel - I swear he has two hard drives built into his brain - the level of independence is insane.

Oh yeah - forgot to mention that with the new kit I went back to 22" kick - little less volume but much more controllable with a better "punch", overall a better choice for 95% of situations.

Good to hear from you - glad to hear you still are enjoying playing so much. My last kit was Tempus (small Canadian custom drum maker - all fiberglass shells). It was a 6 piece (3 up and 1 floor tom) 8", 10", 13" and 16" with 24"x18" Kick....the kit was loud as hell and cutting and great for loud situations but lacked warmth of wood. I held onto the Tempus but am REALLY loving the Saturns. The new kit is also 6 piece (2 up and 2 floors) 8", 10", 12" and 14" with a 14x5.5 snare and I also purchased a Black Panther 12x7 cherry snare with killer crack to it. I really like the sound of wood best and the kit has a wider dynamic range. the 2 inner plies of walnut bring out a lot of extra depth and projection. The 14" floor sounds bigger than a lot of 16" floors I have played. The Saturns are a kit I can easily play for the next 5 years or more with no need to upgrade.

Hey Sven: Been a while since we last spoke. Just wanted to let you know I picked up a new Mapex Saturn 6-piece Studio in Transparent Black stain over the summer. The kit has exceeded all expectations and I am loving the maple/walnut shell combo. I also scaled back my cymbal set up a bit and added a second remote hi-hat off to my right side...wish I had done this sooner as it has opened up lot of new possibilities. I got inspired to add in the remote hi-hat after buying Virgil Donati's 2-DVD "Live In Stockholm" where he blew my wind with his twin hi-hat grooves. It is fun to play syncopated quarter and eight notes with foot on left hi-hat while using right hat in closed position to play different stickings. Hope all is well with you and that your drumming continues to progress.
