The problem with L.A. is It's so vast. Santa Monica to the west, funky Echo Park to the east. Cruise Sunset and Holywood blvd. (the latter's quite grungy). And Amoeba Records! Please be careful in TJ, not trying to discourage you, but I don't think it's worth the risk. Cross the border, hit up the nearest taco stand and local merch and walk back thru customs to the U.S. and call it good. Oh if you can make your way to the top of Griffith Park in the Hollywood hills to the well-famed observatory it's quite a view. Your guided tour is over for now!

Firstly, I hope Coachella is mild when you're in town for it--never been to that festy, but I've passed through there and I don't do well in the heat. Have fun! But the Belly Up, it's about 45 mins up the coast from me, but it is a renowned venue. It's casual and intimate, I've been there several times. You will enjoy it. I've not listened to a lot of the Hives, don't plan on going to that show, but if you record a good show I might be convinced to become a fan. It's sold out! Regardless, you'll be in one of THE most beautiful coastal communities in San Diego, so enjoy the area before you leave. Lmk if you have any questions while you're in SD... Oh! You raved about Geoff's show, haven't had a chance to listen to it yet, what is wrong with me. Thanks for the head's up!

The more information the better. I find it easy learning this stuff via someone who has done it for ages. I believe the Zoom h4n has 4 channel recording so i guess that means i can record through the desk, and use another channel to record audience too. I am planning to go to Sleepmakeswaves at the Evelyn, would of liked to see Solkyri tonight as well at the espy though. I'll PM you my number and we can. That would be great if you can show me man, would probably be able to get things around my head...

Sorry one more, recording via the desk, depending on the desk, could this be done using a simple AUX cord, or would you use some sort of direct output from the desk into capturing device, i guess depending on the device you could record via desk as well as set up the internal mics to record audience.

Sorry, one more question, do you usually just clip the mic to yourself? If the opportunity arose at a smallish gig where you could place your recorder down and mount the mic on some sort of micro-mic-stand, would you reccomend this? Silly question really.

Ah man, thank you so much for the time to reply. I reckon I'll be getting some sort of rig up within a month or two, keen to record some gigs, and yes, agree with 'audience' recording, so many live albums i have listened to you can barely hear crowd singalongs which sound awesome at times. I'll register on that site and check the mic out.

I'm pretty certain on the $120 mic i reckon, i've got the sydonia gig from june 17 2011 and that is really good. Also, I've heard that plugging into the desk can give you varied results; too much vocals and drums. Best place to stand would probably be around the mixing desk wouldn't it? As for editing i assume you can do all sorts of things with basic software such as Audacity? Thanks a lot for your replies, much appreciated.

I'm good thanks man, just been gigging it up heaps, and keen to record some stuff, you? I would be interested in spending about $120 if it produced really great quality, i'll have a listen to some recordings. I'm pretty keen on getting the zoom H4n as i may also be looking at doing some recording of non-music stuff i.e student films. I've done quite a bit of research on the h4n and it seems like a good option, what do you think?

Hey man, awhile ago (1+ years ago) we talked a bit about sound recordings at gigs and stuff, I've been looking at a Zoom H4n and I was wondering if you could recommend a good starting off mic?

That is a serious line-up of upcoming shows. And Coachella! Hopefully Tab gets to go with you to Coachella. V That tumblr site might be worth investigating, hmm.
