Analyzing music can be a very multi-faceted experience, really. Dance music is analyzed by taking in the beats and the melodies they carry. Other types of music have their lyrics, progressions and motifs analyzed. As far as Sufjan Stevens goes, analyzing his music is a matter of listening closely and finding the many different soundscapes he paints with his elaborate arrangements. The string section in "They Are Night Zombies!" is a good example...
