I don't either heh. Nor do I listen to much death metal (some Opeth, I think, is about it), so I can't make much of the comparison. The vocals (if there are any) are often just decoration, and I believe the whole more-trippy-than-rhythmic thing is part of the point. Obviously depends on the specific band, and I haven't explored yet nearly as much as I want to. I was initially blown away by Isis; Neurosis sounds sort of boring to me by comparison, but hopefully that'll change after I listen to them more. (And while I've barely listened to Cult of Luna, a friend of mine who was/is a big Opeth fan got into the genre with them.) (For something heavier, maybe A Storm of Light, Mouth of the Architect - The Ties That Blind, or Isis - Wavering Radiant? But I'm sort of hesitant to recommend anything given my own relatively-limited exposure.)

ever tried listening to post-metal / sludge (Isis, Neurosis, Cult of Luna, and friends)? it's basically like prog metal, except awesomer. (though perhaps this doesn't apply to dream theater / ayreon type prog metal, which i don't particularly like. so who knows.)

About Me

Nihilism is the theory that meaning beyond the immanent is irrelevant.

Nihilism is the foundation of objectivism. Through removing external value one sees what is actually there, which, given the workings of the universe, has equal value and is thus equally impermanent.

Nihilism is beauty.
