  • Tosca: New Release 28.04.09 "No Hassle"

    13 Feb 2009, 08:01

Prepare to get chilled: Tosca are set to release their No Hassle LP later in the year.

No Hassle is the fifth full-length released by the duo, who are comprised of Richard Dorfmeister (of legendary trip-hoppers Kruder & Dorfmeister) and Austrian musician Rupert Huber. Whereas much of their previous material had Dorfmeister's dubby basslines up front, this album was developed as a more ambient project, combining submerged samples and live instrumentation to create a lush and immersive hour of music.

"It's our personal reaction to everything," explains Richard. "To all things that are pressuring you from outside, or internally, from every angle. It's sort of the ideal position to achieve, and it's the same idea behind the music: to achieve an hour where you feel hassle free."

  • Laurent Garnier - New Release: Tales Of A Kleptomaniac May 2009

    13 Feb 2009, 07:58

Laurent Garnier is set to release his fifth artist album in May, entitled Tales Of A Kleptomaniac.

As to be expected from the genre-hopping Frenchman, the album takes in a multitude of styles; going from techno and house through to drum & bass and even dubstep. Philippe Naudaud and Benjamin Rippert will resume the instrumental duties that they took on his Public Outburst LP from 2007, and it's likely that they will also play as part of the live setup for Garnier's forthcoming tour.

A full tracklisting hasn't yet been made public, but we do know that last year's Innervisions hit "Back To My Roots" will feature, as well as "Gnanmankoudji," which is set to be released as a single on March 9th. Gilles Peterson also gave away details of album-opener "No Musik" on his Radio 1 show, calling it a "modern day funk anthem" that "evokes groups like Kleeer and Cameo using dubstep snares and electro sounds over a Sugarhill rapture."

[PIAS] Recordings will release Tales Of A Kleptomaniac on May 11th, 2009.

  • The Rebirth of Cool:Muxtape returns

    11 Feb 2009, 03:51

Muxtape is back online and testing.

    Background

It was only a short while ago that Muxtape had to shut down due to pressure from the RIAA, and, well, that whole copyright thing. They cited licensing issues and said "Muxtape will be unavailable for a brief period while we sort out a problem with the RIAA."

Those days are behind us, my friend, and Muxtape has quietly kicked off its new service.

"Welcome to a preview of the new Muxtape, a minimalist platform for bands to promote their music and listeners to create mixes. We’ve invited 12 of our favorite artists to help test, and in the coming weeks we'll begin allowing bands to sign up themselves for free," reads the message on the Muxtape web site.

They've invited acts like Of Montreal, Dan Deacon, Girl Talk, and Apes & Androids to help kick things off.

Muxtape allows users to create the modern-day online version of a mix tape, creating a playlist of songs that can then be shared with others. They offer a service that allows bands without the cash to pay for web development to get online and spread the word. They also plan to offer options like a calendar, photos, comments, downloads and sales.Source: Spacelab Research Staff
  • Moby - Recording New Album to be released later in 2009

    11 Feb 2009, 03:26

Meloncholy Moby music will be available for fans later this year, as Moby has headed back into the studio to work his next full length album. He's been writing it for the better part of a year, and will spend the month of February recording and mixing with the hope of releasing the album in June.

It looks like the Moby is going soft and gushy on this one, saying "Overall it's a lot quieter and more melodic and more emotional record than the last few records."

He's also asking people to hang with him on his "Sunday morning" album, as its a long player and will require a full listen or two to appreciate at first glance.

"I fully know that we live in an age wherein people usually listen to random tracks from an album, but i've worked very hard trying to craft a beautiful and cohesive body of work that will ideally make sense when listened to from start to finish."

He'll be recording and mixing with Ken Thomas (Sigur Ros, M83, Public Image Ltd.).Source: Spacelab Research Staff
  • Free Legal Music Sharing - Groove Armada

    11 Feb 2009, 03:04

Click here to get your first free track to get you on the way to downloading the entire album for free.

    Information:-

Groove Armada ... The always inventive Groove Armada have created a new way to share music online that rewards the people who participate. Called PAP4, or Pass-Along-Paid-For, the system gives away music for free as users share the music with other people.

Once registered, a user will receive the first track off of the new Groove Armada EP for free. To get the second track for free, the user needs to send a link to 20 of their friends. After the track has been shared with 200 people, they'll get the third track. After 2000 times, the fourth track. Which all makes sense until one group of people do it and post it online and it goes viral outside of the Groove Armada system.

But we all know how these go by now, right? People will still share through the Groove Armada system, while others obtain the music by other means. Then on March 2nd, the album will be available for purchase, and people will pay for music that was available for free.

  • Creative Vibes Recordings closing down :-(

CREATIVE VIBES RECORD LABEL & DISTRIBUTION SINCE 1994
    76 APPLEBEE ST, ST PETERS 2044 [P] 02 95174622 WWW.CVIBES.COM

After 15 years it's time to take a break.

In January of 1994 we started up our record label and distribution
company, Creative Vibes. Inspired purely by music, we set out to make sure that music shops, music media and above all, music lovers got to
hear and learn about the many brilliant, but non-mainstream artists from
all over the world, including and especially those on home soil.

We championed the Japanese Acid Jazz sound of Mondo Grosso, UFO, Kyoto Jazz Massive and Soul Bossa Trio, as well as the Brit New Jazz of Down To The Bone and the entire Internal Bass label. We picked up the Ninja Tune label and saw it through those all important first 10 years of life, taking it from the quiet underground to loud minority and beyond, as we did with the Compost label. About 6 months after we released Super Discount we started getting demos from Australian dance and jazz artists with a distinctly French-touch, letting us know that the good stuff was working its magic and helping our own scene to develop. Licensing totally unknown acts from Sweden is not exactly a formula for success in the Australian music industry, especially if the act sings in Swedish, but we still thought Datarock and Familjen made worthy tracks and so did the listening public!

Something about the Tru Thoughts label turned us on so we told everyone who would listen about the label and now names like Alice Russell, Quantic and The Bamboos are part of our music lexicon.

At the time it just seemed like a "good idea" and something we "really
needed to do", but in retrospect we are humbled by the fact that we were
privileged to work with some of the finest Australian talent and to release
their early (in many cases the first) recordings. A sample of that list
includes Soup, Moonrock (Illpickl and Katalyst), Troy and Katie Noonan, Nick Toth and Mako (Dhama Bums), Eon, Multiball, Sheriff Lindo, Jeff Dread, Ollo, The Bird, Superfluid, Duosseudo, The New Black and Gotye.

Between us, the artists and the labels we work with we've got airplay,
gigs, reviews, even nominations and awards including those from DMA
(Dance Music Awards, 4 times nominated and twice winner of Best
Independent Label), ARIA and AIR. Surely we have changed the
    Australian soundscape!
We're hugely proud of the work we've done over the past decade and a
half. Sadly though, as a truly independent company we just can't
compete with large companies and multinational companies supplying
everything from music to computers and electrical items, to give retailers
what they now need to stay in business and sell good music at the same
    time.
It will take us a couple of months to help our labels and artists find new
homes, pack everything up, collect the money our customers owe to us
and distribute it out to our artists and suppliers, but we'll conduct the
wind up as quickly and as efficiently as possible. As always, we are aware

    76 APPLEBEE ST, ST PETERS 2044 [P] 02 95174622 WWW.CVIBES.COM
that we are dealing with people's careers and their art so we will make the
changes as smoothly as we can and can be contacted at our St Peters
office and warehouse. (Of course we would have appreciate the Australian
dollar dropping so drastically and affecting all our imported CDs BEFORE
we moved to our new St Peters warehouse!)

We now look forward to new challenges, but not without thanking those of
you who have supported us and been so great for the past 15 years.
Gordon Henderson, Peter Pasqual and Heidi Pasqual.

  • 2008 Top 15 Chillout Tracks

    24 Nov 2008, 11:17

“Chillout” music encompasses several different musical genres (downtempo, acid jazz, trip hop, house, lounge and electronica). The movement started as an alternative to the ecstasy filled clubs of London where revelers needed a place to cool off after heavy dancing. Clubs often allocated a “chillout room” for those who needed a break but still wanted to listen to music. It eventually became popular at parties and houses after returning from clubs when the party was continuing, but the energy level was coming down.
