Understanding and utilizing MusicBrainz, a 4 phase guide.
29 Aug 2006, 23:37
A lot of people seem to be confused on how to use MusicBrainz both as a simple tagger or more advanced by adding their favorite bands. Having gone through the whole process myself I thought I'd make a few journals that help the average last.fm user get integrated into using MusicBrainz.
It's broken into 4 phases, starting with the most basic involvement all the way to being a part of the community that decides MusicBrainz standards. I don't know everything about MusicBrainz but maybe I can take away some of the mystery and confusion that scares off new users.
Phase 1: Tagging with MusicBrainz PicardQT(updated 12/2007)
Phase 2: Adding information to MusicBrainz
Phase 3: Advanced Relationships
Phase 4: Voting on Edits and MusicBrainz Style Discussion and changes

Must admit I've never quite understood the idea of the site myself (when I go on it, I just end up clicking a link and going around in a circle).
I'll finish reading it tomorrow! -

26 Feb 2007, 14:28How long does it take for last.fm to register data from musicbrainz? I imagine they take a snapshot periodically? -

27 Feb 2007, 18:21That used to be the way it worked. But last.fm's contract with MB lapsed and hasn't been renewed. I've heard from both side that they are in discussions but nothing has come of it in months. -

I still have problem in tagging non-Roman files like the classics Tschaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov or those with Japanese characters. After tagging with MB it cannot be saved due to invalid characters. Is there any requirement in Windows setting?
One more question, do you know any similar site with MusicBrainz for tagging the mp3s?
Thank you. -
