The Study Aid.

16 Nov 2006, 07:02

As with most people my age in South Australia, these past two weeks have been filled with end of year exams. These harrowing, brutal assessments are three hours in length and can cause people to burn out.

Lucky for me, I had a certain study aid. Aerosmith.

I thought I would give the sensory stimulation method of study a go for these important exams. The premise is that you do something while studying, then replicate that in the exam room to stimulate your memory. Some people wear a certain perfume while studying and wear it again in the exam, some listen to a certain type of music and play it back in their heads.

I chose the latter, which is significantly more difficult. Perfume is physical and sticks with you. Keeping your mind focused on both studying, completing exams and keeping a certain tune in your head requires maximum chilling out. The instant you stress, you lose your short term memory. And for loads of us, most of what we knew in a subject was banked up in there.

As you can see, I have scrobbled Aerosmith more than 500 times in the last 8 or 9 days.

On the weekend of the 5-6th of November, I saw an ad on telly for "Devil's Got a New Disguise", another one of Aerosmith's greatest hits albums. I noticed in the ad how catchy so many of those songs were. I went ahead and 'acquired' this album and began listening when studying.

I have to say that it worked a treat. Not everyone's cup of tea but it worked for me. I hardly stressed and could recall quite a lot, and hopefully it translates into a TER which allows me to get my first preference.

Kinda takes the gloss off the whole thing when you think about how massive Steve Tyler's mouth is.
