Seven Kickass Albums

23 Aug 2006, 11:18

I never used to like music the way I do now. Over the past 4 or so years I have come to explore and love it. Prior to that I was hung in the mainstream, knew of only songs that were on the radio. Tsk tsk.

In these years, I have come across albums that I refer to as 'favourites' or just plainly kickass. They arent albums with just one good song, but a majority of good songs.

Ixnay on the Hombre was one of the first albums I bought by The Offspring. It had a buttload of music used in the first Crazy Taxi game (which kicks an equivalent amount of ass) and really got me into them before seeing them live in 2004. Top songs are 'Gone Away', 'I Choose' and 'Amazed'.

The Fat of the Land is an album that a lot of my favourite The Prodigy songs seemed to lead to. 'Smack My Bitch Up', 'Narayan', 'Breathe' and 'Firestarter' kick the most ass. Also, the crab makes it look ubercoolies.

Decksandrumsandrockandroll is by definition, kickass. It was hard to get the Propellerheads album initially, I ended up finding it in the East Coast last year. Everyone knows of 'Spybreak!' from the first Matrix and all other songs within the album have intreguing voice overs before they start. 'Bang On!', 'Velvet Pants' and 'Take California' are some of the better tracks, but they're all easy on the ears and get you bopping.

Element Eighty is the self titled album for my top artist. Element Eighty are a metal band from Tyler, Texas and got their huge break with 'Broken Promises' being featured in NFSU. I dont really dig that groove, but 'Bloodshot', 'Scars', 'Parachute' and 'Rubbertooth' are my picks.

Siren Song of the Counter Culture was an odd one. I never liked it initially because Tim McIllrath's voice pierced my mind. But once I got over that I realised how great this album is. I started off slow with 'Swing Life Away' and then started listening to the rest. I love 'Blood to Bleed', 'Give it All' and 'Paper Wings'. Im hoping to see Rise Against in December this year.

Back Into Your System was the second album I got from Saliva. I thought 'Every Six Seconds' was good, this takes the cake hardcore. The reason Saliva is so high up on my list is because of 'Always', 'Raise Up', 'Weight of the World', 'Rest in Pieces', 'Pride' and of course, 'Back Into Your System'.

Meds is a very recent album, I realise. I've always loved Placebo from the first time I saw 'Cruel Intentions'. It was an early morning when I saw the clip for 'Song to say Goodbye'. The story behind the clip got me into the rest of the album. 'Infra-Red', 'Drag', 'Meds', 'Post Blue' and 'Blind' all make the album excellent, and it is good to see that people are still churning out good music in 2006.

There are loads more albums I like, but just dont reach the top of the pile like these ones do all the time. If I had to spend my life listening to only the music from these artists, I wouldnt mind at all.
