Update: This journal entry serves as a link collection of japanese artists that share a name with a western artist. (Why japanese? Because we're using the japanese romaji char-set in unicode to distinguish the japanese bands from the western ones, until last.fm has come up with a way to seperate artists.)

What are the advantages of this?

- gives even small and unknown japanese bands their own pics and charts. Just because they don't have many listeners shouldn't mean that they can't have a profile of their own
- solves capitalization (ex. HeaRt instead of Heart.)
- avoids shoutbox drama
- it's not fair for the listeners of those western bands if a small but vocal group of vk fans try to take over the profile, just because of some new indies band, that will disband in a few months anyway and has been rather unimaginative with their name

How to: to create a new unicode-profile you need to scrobble at least one track. If you don't know how to type unicode romaji you can copy and paste from here:

ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz

Note that the unicode characters are case-sensitive! So make sure you use the correct capitalization.

If you don't how to make you're player display unicode, take a look at my other journal entry "scrobbling japanese".

If you know of any japanese band that needs a unicode profile, leave a comment. I will add it here to connect the 2 profiles. Also take a look at ando_hades' journal about the same topic.

----------------THE LIST--------------------

I will put all artist names and their alternative unicode spelling in here in order to get the artist conncetion show up on the band pages. Kind of a Link-hub to connect the 2 band pages. If you want any artists added here, just leave a comment.

    Hi dear, how's life? :)
Personally I think it's not such a bad idea after all. Until last.fm sorts out this problem... and god knows when that will be. And, if I'm not mistaken, they want to distinguish artists based on Musicbrainz discographies. But will have obscure bands a discography there at all? Until I see how that system works, I remain sceptical.

Oh yeah, and this method also solves the problem of capitalization. Heart / HeaRt , Maverick / MaveRick...

But I agree that probably few people will do it. Some because they don't think it's tr00 enough, and some because they can't even be bothered to tag japanese names in japanese.

Yay, some kind souls (including you =)) voted for the pics for LuLu, MaveRick and gossip. HeaRt has a pic now too.

Some more alternative profiles that could need some voting:
    Katharsis
    BERLIN

If there are any more I'd be happy to vote for them.

    Thanks!^^

All my pictures are approved now. I uploaded some more of some obscure vk indies bands that get mixed up with other bands. Just because they're small doesn't mean they don't deserve a profile of their own^^

    Dio *approved*
    DESPERADO
    MoNoLith *approved*

Thanks for your new suggestions :)
I've added them to the list.

I found three more XD It's so troublesome to find appropriate pictures for 'em all, isn't it?

Fester --> FESTER (ok, they only had one song, but it's worth it ><)
    hear --> HEAR
    Misery --> Misery

I'll keep an eye on your list as well!

I'm not trying to cause trouble, but I'm curious so I have to ask: why use the LuLu profile instead of ルル? Clearly people have no problem leaving the song titles written in Kanji, and therefore must have a media player that allows unicode, so why go through all the hassle?

I think it's a great idea for bands like GHOST, because I agree the drama over there is really ridiculous and there's two Japanese bands with the name. I also think it's suitable for Dolly as there's two more Japanese band under ダリ. I just hope last.fm sorts out the problem soon.

And, I'm sure you know this already, but visunavi is great for band pictures!
  • Champ213 wrote:

I use LuLu (or LuLu) because that's how it's written on the band's official HP:

    http://m-space.jp/a/?lulululu

It's also written LuLu on Amazon, Neowing (CD Japan) AND the singles covers.

I have seen the profile for ルル before, but I honestly don't know where this comes from. The only place where I saw ルル refering to this band is Visunavi, and Visunavi gives katakana pronounciation for *every* band, regardless if their name is originally written in Romaji, kanji or kana. That doesn't make the katakana the official band name.

So, like you said, if people are able to use tags in unicode anyway, why use ルル instead of LuLu, which is closer to the original name?

I definitely agree on the ルル/LuLu subject; people retagging band names to katakana when it is not the way the band themselves write the name is overdoing it. I can understand if a Japanese site does it to aid with pronunciation or something, but that doesn't make it the band's actual name.

Last.fm has a lot of problems with their database (especially with merged profiles, bad tag moderation, etc.), and while this is a good solution, it'd take way too long to start retagging my MP3s in this manner (and I still have so much to retag in the first place). If only Last.fm would fix tag moderation and properly implement a good source (MusicBrainz tends to be just as bad).

I use Mp3Tag for retagging large quantities of files. It has full unicode support except for some minor glitches, that can be worked around. Only for Windows though.
However I still haven't retagged all of my file either. I usually only do it when I actually want to listen to them.

I kinda lost hope on Last.fm fixing the problem in the near future. And I'm suspicious of that Musicbrainz solution.

I also use MP3Tag, but it would still take a really, really long time to do this, haha. I try to retag files all the time, but it's kind of depressing when you retag 10gb of MP3s only to notice that it hasn't made a dent. I've done well over 200gb so far, and it still seems like there's an infinite amount left. =[

But yeah, I mostly try to tag stuff I want to listen to most, but even then it takes so long. Had I been smart, I would have started retagging everything properly when I started, and retagged everything I've downloaded in short order. Unfortunately this never seems to happen, haha.

I also lost hope on Last.fm fixing anything that needs fixing, since they seem to be more worried about adding more broken/useless social features, and prettying/uglying up the layout. I don't think they can actually solve these problems without a lot of work, so they've decided to just let them be and claim that MusicBrainz integration will solve everything (when it's fully implemented).

Unfortunately, MusicBrainz is as bad as Last.fm (you have good reason to be suspicious) with bad moderation, petty squabbles, etc. that get in the way of proper tagging, and the database is full of improper tags. Not only that, but they promote a lot of practices that don't really make any sense, and, if you've attempted to use their retagging applications, you'd quickly see how useless they are for retagging Japanese music. =[

Theoretically they could solve it by creating a better database solution where you can have disambiguation for artists, but I think this would require a pretty big rewrite.

I remember downloading the Musicbrainz tagging application ('Picard' or something). I imagined it would help me tagging my files, at least for more common artists, but eventually it just screwed up some of my tags. I still haven't really figured out what it's supposed to do, so I gave up on it.

Alright, the problem is described in this thread:

    http://www.last.fm/forum/21713/_/223193

Changes are in place on the backend in how images are handled. These changes are now working on the beta site.

Non-subscribers: Just a waiting game. Either the beta site will go live soon, or staff will implement the image changes to the main site before the beta goes live. Either way, only thing to do at the moment is wait.

SUBSCRIBERS: You can upload images. Simply use the beta site to do it.

I can see the correct pic at the beta site, so it's just a matter of time until it shows up for you as well^^
