World music

The term “World Music” has been credited to ethnomusicologist Robert E. Brown who coined it in the 1960s. The term became current in the 1980s as a marketing/classificatory device in the media and the music industry, and it is generally used in a discriminatory and problematic fashion to classify any kind of non-Western music, even including some Western styles such as Celtic Folk music. > I don't know any music, that isn't from this world.... Oh my, there's plenty ▼ ◀ ◣ ;) Look, I'm a lefty, but the description is daft. It just means music from around the world, i.e. not the countries where the term was first used. It's over-broad, but then so're "electronica" and "rock". "Colonial", my foot (else it might be colonic).

A lot of people are discrediting the tag 'World Music' but I don't think it is such a bad idea! I have recently started a digital World Music & Culture Magazine. TETO (To Each Their Own) Music aims to go beyond the standard concepts of music magazines by getting rid of the usual labels associated to music and its genre. This will be accomplished by splitting the articles by continent and having artists categorised geographically rather than by genre in order to highlight the cultural context of the music in question. Check out the links below to have a read about some of the pioneers associated to countries around the World.
