Visual Kei (ヴィジュアル系) refers to a movement among Japanese musicians, that is characterized by the use of eccentric, sometimes flamboyant looks. To me, visual kei is the equivalent of saying Japanese underground music (usually some form of a rock/metal band). It's a type of scene and tradition where looks contribute to the theme of their sound

I can't really see what everybody is complaining about? Visual Kei is obviously about having a certain look. But it's also about sounding in a certain way (like most other genres). Ofcourse there are V-kei artists with bad voices, but that's not specific for V-kei. And it's undeniable that there are some V-Kei artists with really-really good voices. And about Dir En Grey. No, they aren't V-Kei anymore. But some years ago, they were. And for someone who are a true fan of them, it wouldn't be a problem if they were tagged as 'Visual Kei'. There are several other bands who started with being V-Kei artists, but then started doing other kinds of music to get a bigger public.
