Thrash metal

Thrash metal (sometimes referred to simply as thrash) is a subgenre of heavy metal music, one of the extreme metal subgenres that is characterised by high speed riffing and aggression. Thrash metal songs typically use fast, percussive and low-register guitar riffs, overlaid with shredding-style lead work. Thrash metal lyrics also often deal with social issues using visceral and blunt language, an approach which partially overlaps with the hardcore genre. Runoflife is talking about US power metal though, which has always been more of a relatively underground style when compared to the "flowery" European variety. Assuming you even consider US power metal to be power metal that is.

Also I can hardly say how a power metal bands is selling out since power metal itself is in general a mainstream genre. "Selling out" for a power metal band would be turning into pop rock.

Pop metal is stuff like Def Leppard, Turbo era Judas Priest and Scorpions from Blackout forward. Metallica made a heavy metal album and then two hard rock albums, Megadeth followed a similar path and Slayer were hardly the only thrash band, American or otherwise, who dabbled in alternative rock/metal (Kreator, Forbidden, Destruction, Sepultura, Depressive Age) or went post-thrash/groove (Testament, Flotsam & Jetsam, Prong, Demolition Hammer, Exodus). Very few 1980s thrash bands who didn't disband kept playing thrash in the 1990s like Sodom.
