Syncopation is a technical term in music including those rhythms that are surprising and/or deviate from the standard downbeat-upbeat pattern. This can include stressed beats where you’d expect unstressed ones or vice versa. Common forms include missed beats, suspensions, anticipated bass, and “even note” and “off beat” rhythms.
