Symphonic metal

Symphonic metal is a term used to describe heavy metal music that has symphonic elements; that is, elements that sound similar to a classical symphony. Symphonic metal is both a genre of metal and a name given to several subgenres of other metal genres, and as such, both forms of usage have slightly varying definitions. Thanks, NightVermillion. I wasn't sure I was making myself that clear, but you seem to have gotten the gist of it. From my limited experience with it, it definitely seems like symphonic metal is a somewhat loosely defined genre that can mean different things to different people. Yes, I was thinking more along the lines of instrumentation, but I guess a more appropriate way to describe that would be orchestral metal/rock. As symphonic music has developed, it's really always been somewhat experimental based on what instruments and techniques were available, so it's a little shortsighted of me to think symphonic metal could only be that if it used violins and such. That being said, so far I find myself mainly enjoying the really theatrical/operatic stuff like I've heard on some recent Nightwish albums I've checked out, and also the purely orchestral rock. I'll have a listen to some of those bands you listed and see what I think. Thanks for giving me a place to start.

txanimator: Symphonic Metal isn't limited to the instrumentation. It could also be the way a song was composed in, or any other elements that hold resemblance to Symphonic music. If you want to focus more on the instrumentation though (which I guess is what you mean, because symphonic could actually mean many things), some Therion albums could do the trick. Albums like Theli, Vovin, Crowning of Atlantis, Deggial, Secret of the Runes... Basically anything that comes after their 4 first albums but before their last 2 ones (which are not bad, but they just aren't what you're looking for). Also, there is Jelonek, which I believe is fully instrumental. Not sure if I would consider him Symphonic Metal, but I think you will like that music. Same with David Garret. If you check them out, please let me know how it goes!

This is a strange genre for me. I like a lot of this music, yet I've never been much of a metal fan, so I find myself wishing the music did some different things. For instance, it seems like the vast majority of it is female fronted rock from people who all sound very similar. The highlights have been Within Temptation, Tarja, and Nightwish. However, I really hate the growls in some of the music, and I wish there was more going on with the 'symphonic' aspect. And, I kind of wish it wasn't all gothic oriented. Basically, I'm looking for something more like Trans-siberian Orchestra, with that kind of classical influence.
