Swing

Swing music, also known as swing jazz, is a form of jazz music that developed in the early 1930s and had solidified as a distinctive style by 1935 in the United States. Swing uses a strong anchoring rhythm section which supports a lead section that can include brass instruments, including trumpets and trombones, woodwinds including saxophones and clarinets or stringed instruments including violin and guitar; medium to fast tempos; and a “lilting” swing time rhythm. True. When most people think swing, they think the classic big band acts. Shaw, Ellington, Basie Goodman... those should be the meat and potatoes of this genre, supplemented by stuff like Calloway, Webb (and Ella), Henderson... even Kirk and Lunceford. A lot of what's getting tagged swing is actually dixieland, "trad" jazz and jazz inflected pop music (like Sinatra.) Too bad.

i'm wondering how people use the 'swing' tag, do they mean the jazz genre, the classic jazz era, the swing style within a lot of jazz music or some feeling in a tune whatever ? it's used all over the place, and it's of no use to play swing tag radio ... back to music school, fellow music lovers :-)
