Punk rock (sometimes shortened to 'punk') is a form of hard-edged rock music part of the alternative subculture that features electric guitars playing power chords, deep bass lines, energetic drumming and energetic beats, either singed or yelled vocals and a loud hard rock volume which originally rooted from pub rock and even garage rock. It has also been associated with the punk subculture which was based on the DIY ethnic; thinking for yourself; making your own decisions without regards to one's reputation or the opinions of others. Some say the music originated April 23rd, 1976 in New York by the Ramones and in the 1970s. Others would argue that punk originated with its earlier strain, . Early punk is sometimes referred to as , coined after the year it was popularised by early punk bands such as the Ramones. The punk movement was popularised by bands such as the Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Clash and The Buzzcocks. Later on the genre developed into the plethora of multiple punk subgenres that includes street punk, Oi!, hardcore punk and horror punk as exampled. Bands included Ramones, the Clash, Sex Pistols, Minor Threat, Buzzcocks, Dead Kennedys, Dead Boys, Television (Formerly The Neon Boys), Richard Hell & The Voidoids, Rise Against, Black Flag, D.O.A, Green Day, the Offspring, blink-182, Misfits, Murderdolls, Balzac, AFI, The Exploited, The Casualties, Gang Green, Guttermouth, NoFX, Rancid, Operation Ivy, GBH, L7, Clit 45, Alkaline Trio, 4-Skins, etc.

Typical lyrics themes can be anything but mostly include DIY, social issues, violence, anti-establishment, anarchism and life scenes.
