The earliest known examples of music commonly identified as “Metal” mainly from the late 1960s and early 1970s, these include hard rock pioneers such as Cream , Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin, but more obscure Heavy Psych , Hard Blues and Progressive Rock groups that sprung up in the US, UK, and Germany as well.     Coven are only thrown in with the proto-metal stuff because of the Satanic and occult themes which are also prevalent in heavy metal.. musically they are more akin to the psychedelic folky rock coming out of san francisco at the time... the Jefferson Airplane comparisons seem pretty sound to me, although i'm admittedly not very familiar with Jefferson Airplane..
