The term "progressive rock" should have died a long time ago (I blame Marillion and the deterioration of Genesis). That term mysteriously resurfaced at some point after the 90's. I don't know what bands like Mars Volta / Porcupine Tree / Coheed & Cambria should be called, but not progressive rock. Progressive rock is sacred!

In terms of the best up and coming acts in prog, Haken, Cormorant, and Ne Obliviscaris are the front-runners for the next big acts imo.
