nu metal

Wiki

Nu metal, also spelled , it was primarily a collection of bands that mixed various other genres with heavy rock music, including but not limited to , and . The earlier bands were inspired by artists such as Faith No More and Helmet and genres such as and . In its usual form, it takes rhythmic elements from hip-hop/industrial metal and distorted guitars from metal/post-hardcore, combined with clean or screamed/shouted vocals, (rap is also sometimes used but not as often).

The technique that nu metal guitarists use is detuned strings whose lower pitch creates a thicker, more resonant sound. Strings detuned in this way are often drop-D or lower, sometimes adding a seventh string. When the band KoЯn first began its career, members of the band stated that guitar solos had become saturated and too boring in the music industry, thus they felt no need for them.

Nu metal’s orgins are in the in Southern California, from bands such as Deftones and KoЯn. Other main artists are Disturbed, Mudvayne, Godsmack and Drowning Pool.

Nu metal is controversial among the fans of more established metal genres, who often consider the hip hop influence negative, as well as the mainstream popularity of several bands.
