The phrase ‘Mod’ is not a particularly useful one musically, it is however a word that best describes the youth movement and ensuing sub-culture of the mid-60’s, whereby young teenagers would don smart suits and dresses to escape working class stereotypes regarding fashion whilst listening to raw and raucous R&B / Soul influences (in contrast to the stronger Blues influences of their Rocker contemporaries). No, it isn't any paradox to like both hippies and mods. Mods predated hippies. When the mod culture faded in the latter part of the 1960s, some mods who were into psychedelia and folky sounds eventually became hippies. Those mods who were more working class and who stuck to Jamaican sounds shaved their heads and evolved into skinheads. Think about Small Faces: their first album was pure mod R'n'B but their last album Ogden's Nut Gone Flake was full of colourful flower power psychedelia.
